It was a clear day and nothing much going on at home. Summer meant there would be a lot of people there. How fun! Rainbow strapped on her boots and walked out her bedroom door. Mom was in the kitchen, but Rain just walked on through yelling as she opened the door and stepped through, "I'll be at the park. I've got my phone" The walk down the hall wasn't too long before she reached the elevator. Nobody was inside, so she automatically pressed the button with the 1 on it, to send her to the lobby. The door squeaked close before the sudden falling motion that always gave her butterflies in her stomach. The elevator beeped each time it hit a floor, finally ending at 1 with a large push upwards, or so it felt. The doors opened as Rainbow stepped out, headed for the door. The park wasn't too far away. Just a couple blocks. As she walked, she saw all the regular dog walkers who walked each of their dogs to let them lift their leg for a tree. A few blocks and the entrance to the park that has been there longer than Rainbow could remember. Just as she had thought, walking up through the parking lot, since it was Saturday, it was crowded of course. Walking the whole way through, she couldn't find much of a spot to park if she had drove her way here. Thankfully, the park was close enough to walk to. Walking up the sidewalk that connected all of the park, she found children playing sports, running around, and even towards the pond, taking a swim. She looked around, contemplating what she should do. What did she come here for? To just stand around and watch people have fun? Play basketball or soccer? But then, taking her out of her thoughts, she found a patch of sunlight, lighting a bit of a hill not too far from the pond all the way in the back. She was a little more than halfway through the 2 mile wide park now, 6 miles in perimeter. The sun attracted her thoughts enough to decide that she was going to lay down and listen to her surroundings. Walking up to it, she found the spot was in a perfect oval. Then again, ovals weren't perfect when you were trying to make a circle, but it was perfectly long enough to fit her inside. She layed down in the green, newly cut, fresh grass, not caring about the new clothes she was wearing and of any stain they may have when she finally gets up. She got down on her hands and knees and rolled over onto her back, wiggling a bit to get in the right spot. She listened to the sounds of all the children playing with each other, the trees swaying in the wind's breeze. It was a very calming situation, and Rain took it all in, almost falling asleep. But something intruded in her thoughts. Footsteps walking down the path, and she knew it was the sound of shoes. |
